Organic Pastured Farm-Fresh Eggs and Chickens
A Healthier Way
Our laying flock of certified organic hens produces our Rainbow Eggs, which are local favorites. Willow-Witt Ranch organic pastured hens are raised on rotating pasture and organic grain. Fresh air, pure water, sunlight, and natural bugs provide them a healthier and happier life. Diversity of diet, health benefits of grazing new ground daily, and a greater resistance to disease are just a few of the reasons chickens raised on pasture produce superior eggs, higher in Omega-3 Fatty Acids.
Commercial birds are raised in confinement or traditional ‘free range houses,’ defined as "access to outdoors;" this could include a small opening at the end of a 200 foot long house filled with thousands of chickens They rarely use any outdoor access as the food is indoors. ‘Pastured’ is defined as a "sustainable agriculture technique that calls for raising birds on pasture without indoor confinement".
A More Sustainable Way
The daily movement of the birds allows our pastures to regrow, with an added boost from nitrogen-rich chicken waste. Combined with rotational grazing of goats, our pastures remain healthy and productive. In winter, when the pastures are deep in snow, the hens live closer to the barn and are fed fermented organic grains and organic alfalfa. They appreciate the extra chlorophyll and bugs, and continue to produce eggs with no artificial light.
A Respectful Way
As our hens reach the end of their productive laying period, they are slaughtered respectfully on farm and are sold as ‘Stewing Hens.’ We feel that using our laying hens secondarily for meat honors the birds’ full potential.
Organic Broiler Chickens
We raise organic broiler chickens (these are the ones you roast, fry or barbecue for the best chicken dinner you’ve ever eaten). Our broilers are moved to new organic pasture daily and eat an organic soy-and corn-free ration; they reach the 3-4 pound carcass weight in 12 weeks. We take orders for on-farm pickup in late summer, or check our Farm Store for availability of frozen chickens.
